When you decide to move home, it is fair to say that one of the most important factors to take into consideration is where you’d like to live. The location of your property will have such a huge impact on your day-to-day life and it is essential to choose somewhere that meets all of your individual needs and preferences. There are so many great areas, especially in the East of England, and deciding where you’d like to live isn’t always easy. To help ensure you make the right decision, below is a list of important things to consider when choosing an area to live in.

Whether you’d like to be in close proximity to a town or city centre

Some people love living in the countryside where their nearest neighbour is miles away, but others will prefer living in a busy city where everything they need is right on their doorstep. You need to think about what type of lifestyle you’d like and whether being in close proximity to a town or city centre is important to you. You may find that your priorities in this regard are different from what they used to be, so consider what’s best for you right now.

What amenities you’d like to be able to walk to

Depending on whether you pop to a supermarket every day, you frequently visit the post office or you enjoy going for a drink on a Friday night, you might have specific wants and needs when it comes to amenities. Consider where you’d ideally like to be able to walk to from your home and what areas are able to offer you everything you need. You may be surprised by what villages are able to offer in terms of amenities nowadays, so don’t rule them out straight away.

How long it will take you to get to work

If you don’t work from home, it is really important to take into consideration your commute when choosing a new area to live in. Think about how long it’s going to take you to get to work and whether the transport options you need are available to you. It is also worth thinking about local job opportunities as well. Say, for example, if you decide to leave your current job or you’re made redundant, being able to get another job locally will be really beneficial. Potential job opportunities are always worth considering, just in case.

Whether you will be able to continue with hobbies and interests

How you like to spend your spare time can be easy to overlook when you’re comparing different areas, but in order for you to still be able to enjoy your hobbies, you need to make sure that there is something for you nearby. Whether you’re currently on a sports team, you enjoy going to the gym, you’re part of an amateur dramatics society or you like to cycle, for example, always think about your interests when deciding on a new area to call home.

What the local schools are like

When you have children or you plan on having children in the near future, it is essential to ensure there are good schools in the local area. Getting a good education is so important and you don’t want to have to drive for hours every day to take your children to and from school. If you’re going to be bringing up children in the area you move to, it is undeniably worthwhile looking at things like crime rates too, after all, you want your children to be safe.

How far away you will be from friends and family

For some people, being close to their loved ones is crucial, whereas it isn’t necessarily as important for others. Consider how quickly you’d like to be able to get to your parent’s house or your best friend’s house if they needed you, and how far you’re willing to drive to attend get-togethers and parties. The last thing you want is to be separated from the people you love if you prefer to live near them.
